I know very little about wine, but for the minute amount I consume, white wine is usually my choice. The Cake Club is introducing their cake and wine menu featuring wines by Sommelier Selection. Before we started the multiple wine pairings for the night, we were served some savory dishes. People might know Cake Club as a dessert or after dinner stop but they have some excellent items on their menu.French Onion Soup (P250). Any french onion soup has to have the requisite cheese covering the soup bowl, and its evident here. Dig under the cheese and release the aroma of the clear beef broth flavored by sweet onions. Neglect not the croutons, which have sopped up flavors like a sponge.GM’s Favorite (P210). A favorite of Diamond Hotel’s general manager and a leftover from Astralis’ menu. A parmesan cheese basket holds fresh greens, forest mushrooms, buffalo cheese, tomatoes drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. This is a fun salad that has a mixture of different flavors from earthy to acidic melding together punctuated by the sharp and crispy cheese container.Sato San’s Mentaiko Spaghetti (P370). This is another dish that was kept on the menu from the Astralis days. It’s a pasta dish with Japanese flavors, cod roe tossed in a spicy cream sauced and topped with nori strips. This is a bit spicy but keep you twirling for more.Slow Roasted Beef Belly (P415). Fatty sliced beef belly with flavors that hardly resounded with me. The best thing in this dish were the addicting honey roasted baby carrots. There are much better and healthier items on Cake Club’s menu that you can order.Roast Chicken (P415). I enjoyed this dish the most among the savory items. Roasted chicken lay over haricot verts (French beans) with a silky and flavorful sauce.Baked Salmon (P455). Crusted salmon slices atop saffron risotto with a creamy Mediterranean sauce. On to the wine and cakes. We tasted a total of 7 wines with different dessert combinations. I had a little sip found a bit of each cake, some of the pairing I liked and some I did not. My favorite wine of the night was the Champalou Vouvray Vin Sec, a golden hued wine with hints of lavender, grapes, honey and marzipan. The wine’s sweet finish endeared itself to my taste buds affinity for sweet stuff. This is also a very versatile wine, able to be paired with all the cakes at the Cake Club. The other wines we tried were Colombelle White and Red, Lamadoro Blanco and Primitivo, Bourgogone Aligote, Dolcetto D’Alba and Clos des Verdots Moelleuz.Looking for a nice after dinner treat then head on over to the Cake Club in High Street Central and experience what wine can do to sweet endings. I came out with a new found appreciation for how wine and expound the sweet flavors of dessert.

Perhaps The Cake Club at Bonifacio High Street had people like me, who prefer main course over dessert, in mind when they conceptualized Alfresco Weekdays where diners get 50% off mains and sandwiches if they dine alfresco on weekdays. Diners just need to present a voucher available at the Facebook page of Diamond Hotel. Through the promotion, I learned that there's more to The Cake Club than cake.I ordered their bestseller, the Slow-Roasted Beef Belly, which was served with vegetables and brown rice. The beef belly was very tender. It was smothered with gravy which did not overpower the beef at all. There were two kinds of vegetables. The salad greens were fresh and crisp. I loved the buttered baby carrots as it was deliciously sweet. Even the brown rice was good, I have a newfound appreciation for it. The only thing I did not like was the horseradish.Because I prefer my Coke Light ice cold, I was happy they served me a chilled glass half filled with ice.I didn't mind dining alfresco. It was cool to people watch, take in a view of the greenery of BHS Central, listen and watch the rain and the background sound and enjoy the breeze. The cake selection is extensive, although they didn't have a sugarfree option during my visit. Royce products are also available for purchase.Whatever you prefer - main course or dessert, there's something for everyone at The Cake Club.

Diamond Hotel's The Cake Club has always been known for its elegant and signature desserts, but go for The Cake Club's burgers and sandwiches for a quick meal and taste another side of The Cake Club... The savory dishes represent yet another side of The Cake Club, and similar to their approach to desserts, the savory dishes are flavorful and elegantly plated consistent with The Cake Club's signature touch. The Angus Burger (P 435), premium beef patty topped with caramelized onions, pesto, and cheddar isn't your regular burger, think level up burgers with the best premium ingredients. And one bite is all you need to taste the difference. And like their desserts, another must try at The Cake Cub are the rich and indulgent Truffle Fries (P 195), crisp, thick-cut fries sprinkled with sea salt flakes and served with ketchup, with an unmistakable layer of flavor from indulgent truffles.Mentaiko Spaghetti (P 370), pasta topped with spicy cod roe, dried seaweed, and cream sauce. An elegant dish, light yet flavorful, a classic pasta with the subtle flavors of fish roe and nori combined with a rich cream sauce. The Cake Club's Reuben (P 385), generously filled with homemade and cured corned beef, sauerkraut and emmentale cheese, a personal favorite. The beefy flavor of the briny premium brisket is enhanced with the sharp sauerkraut and emmentale for light yet filling meal.Lamb Burger (P 490), topped with feta cheese, Harissa Yogurt, and frisee, The Cake Club's take on lamb burgers with a distinct middle eastern flavor with yogurt and endives. Different and tasty, not your usual burger.Looking for a heftier dish? Go for The Cake Club's Slow-Roasted Beef Belly (P 415), served with vegetables and brown rice. Slow food rules. Tender slabs of premium beef belly, slow-roasted to perfection served with sweet baby carrots. And those baby carrots are pretty good too.Looking for something light and healthy? No worries. The Cake Club's Baked Salmon (P 455), with a Mediterranean crust and served with saffron barley rice, packs a whole lot of flavor without the guilt. But leave room for dessert. After your meal, check out The Cake Club's always impressive display of desserts...The Cake Club's Chef, Decker L. Gokioco, on deck to ensure your dining experience is special, any time of day. A light meal, followed by dessert and coffee? You don't even have to go far. The Cake Club offers some of the best desserts on Bonifacio High Street. Pair it with The Cake Club's new Hand-Drip Premium Coffee Selection to complete your meal. Next time you're at BHS, make it The Cake Club.

Before anything else, let me just clarify that what I'm actually reviewing here is solely the Ice Cream Selection, since that was all I was able to try during my visit. The rating I gave may change once I get to try other dishes and offerings, but right now the rating is limited to the Ice Cream Selection, which I believe was the most-awesome I had in years!AFFORDABLE ICE CREAMEach of the flavors offered come in 2 scoops and just cost P180 (as of January 2014) inclusive of taxes and service charge already. Now, that's what I call affordable considering that this is of premium quality. BAKED CHEESECAKE ICE CREAMNow, if you love cheesecakes, you are still missing out - a lot, if you haven't tried this magnificent creation! Each mouthful brings ripples of flavors that make you go ooh-la-la! There was this distinct combination of creaminess, sweetness and saltiness - perfect!SUPERMOIST CHOCOLATE CAKE ICE CREAMFor chocolate lovers, you will definitely adore this cocoa-enriched dessert that is full of love and bitter-sweet goodness! It has a dynamic texture as a result of the infused chocolate cake bits. I was also able to try 2 other flavors (Mont Blanc and Green Tea with Roasted Brown Rice), but they were not as fantastic as the ones mentioned above. I'm not saying they were not good because they still had the rich creaminess that we all look for in an ice cream. However, they were simply overshadowed by the two (2) best ice creams I just had! © Renz Kristofer Cheng (A Not-So-Popular Kid)More food reviews on:www.anotsopopularkid.comFACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/anotsopopularkid
