Nothing is more comforting than home cooked meals. We are all familiar with sinigang, kare kare, bulalo, sisig, batchoy, pinakbet and the like. I’m sure most of us have these at home regularly. But if you are dining in 1521 at Burgos Circle (BGC), I’d say nothing is more comforting than home-cooked meals done really well. 1521 is a modern Filipino restaurant which gives new perspective to classic Filipino dishes. My friend and I had the “1521 Sinigang na Baboy” (P250) and the “Italong mo kay Tulfo” (P220) to go with a big hot bowl of rice. The sinigang was just excellent . The broth was thick and had the right amount of tamarind sourness. I noticed that they used mashed gabi (taro), to thicken it. The fresh chunks of tomatoes and onions also enhanced the flavor. Instead of using boiled pork, they used deep –fried pork strips for the sinigang. This gave the dish a delightful texture contrast (the crunch) and color complement (golden brown). “Italong mo kay Tulfo” is actually an eggplant dish which I think are pounded and spread out and instead of being topped with the usual ground pork, is topped with sisig. It is then dipped in egg and fried to a crisp. This was actually recommended by the waiter. He was darn right to do so. Then why pay more for food we normally eat at home? I think it costs the same to make a great bowl of sinigang and a regular one. The ingredients are the same, but the technique, process and love that goes to cooking is just priceless. Maybe that’s why, despite all the new food fad and concepts out there, our lola’s and mom’s dishes are always special to us.So, to the 1521 chef I’d say : "You are not my mom, definitely not my lola, but you make one good sinigang. (Haha").

I love the potchero ni tangkero and the sinigang here! Normally, kids won't really like veggies, but somehow, 1521 has incorporated all the ingredients that can be mashed up like the saging na saba in the potchero (which I used to hate because of the saging na saba). With the sinigang I also like how creamy or granulated it is because of the gabi. Not too salty, not too soury. Another must try is their Caldereta! ;) thumbs up to the cleanliness, ambiance and staff! :)

I've not eaten this good Filipino comfort food in a long long time. And I've lived in the Philippines for a decade so that's saying something. Bursting with flavour and with generous portions this is a restaurant to go to with a hungry stomach. Ordered the Afritada, Inasal and Sisig. All three were brilliant. And they're not stingy with the garlic. :) Ended with a perfect velvety leche flan. We will be coming back. Again and again.

Fifteen Twenty One serves delicious home cooked Filipino food. Dishes are presented under witty names such as Bonggang Bonggang Binagoongan and Talong mo kay Tulfo.

The creativity of the menu names and the fusions of our old pinoy recipes is a great combination to try to. Serving size is just about right for 2 people. Highly recommend the garlic f. Chicken and talong mo kay tulfo.
