Getting to know the legendary Shantung...website friends described it as legendary or part of their childhood memories. There is something about restaurants with decades-long-history that intrigues....

I'm in my 50's and I could say that I know Shantung. To be more precise about it, I grew up with the brand. I remember dining with my family in the same restaurant, ordering the same food and enjoying the same Chinese feel. However, one can see the age of Shantung peeping through. The Chinese restaurant  is old. Really old.  Shantung needs a renovation. A major one. To bring back the old vitality, the old pizzazz. As they say, to bring back the glory days. But glorious food never left. We tasted the old Shantung touch in every dish served. And my favorite? The Shrimp Balls. Textured pieces with shrimp flavor with every bite. I just love it. Of course, the Pata Tim. I remember that no lunch or dinner at Shantung can never be complete without this very tender pork leg with dark sauce. Another staple in our table is the Shantung Fried Crispy Chicken which can be eaten as is without the sauce or catsup.  The Yang Chow is another must-have (look, I grew up thinking that a Chinese feast will never be enjoyed with plain rice!) that I set aside Intermittent Fasting for awhile and just gorged. Steamed Dumpling. Do I really need to elaborate? And for dessert, Butsi and/Almond Gelatin with Lychees. Perfect with hot tea. My Shantung revisit was an unforgettable one. Couldn't help myself recounting the old days with my millenial website friends who listened patiently. Will be back, Shantung, and this time with the family.

First time here, Dad said he dined here when he was small! We pre-ordered the Stuffed Chicken two days before, it's one of their special menu. It's a boneless chicken with stuffed garnished glutinous rice. It's better than what we had in other Chinese restaurants.Ordered their famous fried chicken too, we are told that the restaurant uses fresh chicken instead of frozen one, very clean and crisp taste of how real chicken tastes like without being overly seasoned.Forgot to take picture of their Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. I appreciate Shantung took the effort to do manually complicated recipes, like this shrimp paste inside the bacon 👍Will visit again for their dumplings as suggested by restaurant staff 😊

Shantung has been at that location for the longest time already. I can remember that my relatives with Chinese blood would bring us here to eat their famous Crispy Chicken and Yang Chow. And I am so happy to be back after a very long time of not eating here.Ambiance - 3.0/5.0As mentioned, I've been eating here for quite some time so I can still remember those times when their chairs are still those foamed ones. Now, they replaced those with foldable ones which is easier to maintain. However, there are some mosquitoes under the table.Service - 3.5/5.0The service is pretty okay. It was not a standout but it was good. I have a feedback which was acted upon fast, so I commend everyone. I just suggest that they should sanitize their plates, glasses and utensils well.Food - 4.0/5.0Hot and Sour Soup - the soup was flavorful and generous in toppings. But if you want to have a more sour soup, ask for a Black Vinegar.Pork in Brown Sauce "Hong Ma" - the Pork Belly is tender and is better with rice. While the sauce is tasty and would be good with Mantou.Fried Intestine - It was crispy. But I suggest it would be better if it was more crispy (like Lechon Macau skin).Shantung Fried Crispy Chicken - the Chicken was really flavorful and crispy even if it is already lukewarm. Also, each Chicken is pretty big. Their star dish indeed.Shrimp Balls - crispy on the outside, very tender on the inside but surprisingly, the Shrimp Ball is intact and does not break at all.Crispy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies - the Crispy Noodles is good on its own and is not salty at all. While the sauce that is included on the meal is flavorful and pretty generous both on the sauce and toppings.Buchi/Butsi - it is pretty big. However, not my favorite but I one of the best ones.

[2018-12-26] It started out as a cloudy day and it started raining before I arrived on site. Fortunately it was very accessible to public transport. Just 2 PUV + MRT rides from Pasay so not difficult to go from where I was. We had iced tea while waiting for the rest to arrive. The food started to be served after a while. First was the hot and sour soup. It was a bit too mild for me but was still ok (I had more than three bowls, hehehe). It would be better with more spice & stronger sour flavor.

ang “shantung” mga daliri ko ay not enough to feast and finish these authentic “hao chi”. their recipes have not changed since 1958 - if this resto was a person, they’d enjoy a senior discount already, free movie screening every mondays and tuesday, saka don’t forget ang pa-cake ni mayor 😹kidding aside, their offerings here screams of legit Chinese cuisine and patrons and it’s a must visit if you’re around the West Avenue QC area. what i loved the most was the 60 years old chinese style fried chicken. that fried batter was amazingly airy and crunchy and the meat was juicy and the flavor had a hint of 5-spice to it, yammeh! my other lovelies were:-fried pancit canton: im not a fan of fried noodles then mixin’ it w/ the sauce to make it soggy again- but this?! this?! was astoundingly good. the noodles itself you can snack on coz it’s already that good and salty (me like) and the canton sauce was the bomb, it was even complemented the yang chow rice sooo well! -shrimp balls: pure diced shrimp encased in mantao then fried- oMg, iba itooo! a tad salty, but not to the point to make you cringe.-hot and sour soup: mind-boggling to see and taste the diced pig blood in there. it was a delicious surprise to have ‘em all in one warm slurp.-pork in brown sauce: this.is.legit.toothsome! the pork was tender, the fat was oh so soft and the taste was packed w/ what dreams are made of... super delicious!!!-mantou: not in pic because it only took a few mouthfuls for me wolf it down. i know, it doesnt have any taste but there’s something to it- the steam?! the bulky yet fluffy bite factor?! the though of bread?! i dunno, but it was the best w/ the pork brown sauce.-buchi: it was served to us out of the fryer and boy i didnt inda the heat. crunchy outside and sticky gooey inside made me really elated!

Shantung Restaurant. 1104 West Ave, Quezon City. REDISCOVER! A family run Chinese restaurant institution will be celebrating their 62nd Anniversary this August 2020. Lunch is an opportune time to discover and to have a feast with some of their best selling dishes. The menu is so vast, what you will see on this post is only 10% of their offering. A well loved brand that is poised to create more family moments in the years to come.MUST! Shantung Fried Chicken - classic, deep fried chicken in a thin but flavorful batter. Buttery in taste, tender and moist. Pata Tim with Mantao - great for large groups. A center piece for dinner with family. One would enjoy portioning the meat with the mantao for everyone in the table.Szechuan Shrimps - not as spicy as i imagined it too be. Very tolerable, can be enjoyed even with the most sensitive of palates.Salted Egg Fried Pork - very light salted egg taste. Tender pork with the just the right amount of crunch.Shrimp Balls - coated with mantao pieces, it is a bigger than your average meat ball, steaming hot when you bite it too soon after being served. Make sure to dip it in some sauce for that added flavor.Crispy Canton - another classic dish, stir in lightly so as to retain some of that delicious crunch.Hot & Sour Soup - served pipping hot with pieces of curdled blood. Cold Cut Platter - a sampling of Shantung's best selling cold cuts. Dessert: Buchi - classic in its make. Very nice meal ender. Recommended when in QC.

I love Chinese food, it must be the seasoning but the large portions which are meant for sharing with your family and friends. The longevity of the restaurant speaks not only of their great food but also of the great people who run it. SHANTUNG, has been around giving us Authentic Mandarin Cuisine since 1958. 60 years of their famous bestsellers.(F)ood:What we had here:● Hot Sour Soup - one of the bestsellers but this one is unique as it contains piig blood that makes it tastier. But I prefer my Hot Sour soup more sour and spicy as this one is a little mild.● Crispy Noodles with Assorted Delicacies - I am all for this crunchy noodles and the sauce is rightly downright delicious. The noodles are crispy and salty and can be eaten on it's own and that goes same for the sauce. You can top it on some rice.● Shrimp Balls - ohhh I love these and even got into third servings of these balls. Shrimp encased in fried mantao. Perfect as appetizers!● Fried Intestine - I don't really eat innards but these are just tasty and perfectly crispy. Eat it while it's hot.● Shantung Crispy Fried Chicken - love this beststellar dish. It's a 60year old recipe handed down from generation to generation so would argue with that, it really is a clasdic treat.● Pork in Brown Sauce / Hong Ma - delicious, lightly seasoned tender pork belly that is perfect with mantou.● Szechwan Shrimp - love the spicy and salty hint of this number.● Fried Squid in Salt and Pepper - I always order this in other restaurants and I find it here equally tasty● Steamed Dumplings - the right amount of filling to wrapper ratio, yummy to dip in the combination chili and soy sauce● Buchi - yummy because it was served hot after cooking. The filling is nutty and yummy● Almond Gelatin with Lychees - I am in love with this dessert. Love the fruity and sweet(A)mbience:This branch has been here for 25 years and it is an attestation of great things that they are doing here but lthey can update their restaurant just to be able to ride and appeal to the millenial audience. It would be more brilliant if they update and sanitize well some of their utensils.(B)utler Service:The food came out fast and the service was just ok but could have been better.

The place is spacious and it's fit for family gatherings, and other private occasions and celebrations. Service is excellent. Parking is available. The ambiance is very private.I won't forget their Patatim, it was so tender and savory. Because of that, I paired it with the rice The meat was gelatinous. It is one of my favorites. The crispy pancit was made saucy because the serving of the sauce itself is big enough. It was salty, but I like it!Shrimp Balls - they used real shrimps, it has a crunchy texture on the outside but soft and flavorful inside.Dumplings - if you like the soft and light dumplings, go for the steamed one. The fried dumplings were crispy in texture. I enjoyed eating it even without soy sauce.Fried Intestine - one of my favorites. At the very first bite, you can easily figure how tasty it is. They can make it more tender.
