I usually avoid Filipino restaurants when I eat out as I could easily cook most of my favorite Filipino dishes at home. However, whenever I crave for dishes that painstakingly take time to prepare like bulalo and kare-kare, I’d eat out. Honestly, I have not heard of Nicandro Lutong Bahay as it doesn’t seem to be active in social media. I only came to be acquainted with this cozy Filipino restaurant tucked along the famous Lilac Street during a Marikina food crawl sponsored by website and ABS-CBN. And I was not prepared to taste something different.

Nicandro Lutong Bahay is known for its Filipino dishes, so I told myself I will give it a try on my birthday. The staff who assisted us and who took our orders was extremely polite. When we wanted to order Liempo (which was out of stock), she apologized and immediately offered an alternative. Good service, I say.We ordered Halaan soup, Pork Sisig, Chopseuy and Garlic Rice. Halaab soup was my favorite! Although it wasn't too hot when it was served to us, I didn't mind since we were dining with kids. The Pork Sisig and Chopseuy were both average. The Garlic Rice bowl is already good for 3-4 people. The ambiance is good. My favorite are their rustic dining tables which compliments the food when you take a picture of it.

The phrase "lutong bahay" warrants a place that has a homey, cozy feel to it and that was my expectation of this restaurant. I never frequent Antipolo or Marikina so I actually had no idea about Nicandro's. At first glance, the interiors actually looked nice. I liked the tables and the set-up. The space was small and it felt a bit cramped. We were served Beef and Ox Tripe kare-kare, Pinakbet sa Bagnet, Sinigang na Baka sa Bayabas and Deep Fried Baby Squid. For our drinks, it was a choice between their house blend iced tea and sugar cane juice.I opted to skip the kare-kare for the reasons I stated above and focused on the other dishes. My top pick would be the Deep Fried Baby Squid! It was perfectly seasoned and the crispy batter somehow got that little melt-in-your-mouth feel. I don't know if it's just me or what. Haha. I really enjoyed eating that. Number two would be the Pinakbet sa Bagnet because I love bagnet and they also did a great job on this one! I usually pick the pork and leave the veggies but this time I enjoyed both. Perfect with a cup of rice! The Sinigang na Baka sa Bayabas was a foreign concept to me. I love my sinigang sour and this had more sweetness to it -- yes, because it was guava-based. It was just okay for me. And while the other foodies chose their house blend iced tea over the sugar cane juice after tasting it, I liked it. Sure, it tasted different but it was really refreshing.

Three times I've been to this "restaurant", nothing but bad service. Always lacked in servers and there's always food that's not available. There's also a lack in communication since the servers don't even know what they can serve.

Value for Money (5.0) - There is no perfect phrase that I can explain how amazing the taste of their dishes. What I felt that the world had stopped every time I chew. I'm lost of words folks.Ambience (5.0) - The interiors are nice, furnitures are just perfect on how they set up everything inside.Customer Service (4.5) - Every staff was so attentive of what we needed. They are quite quick of preparing the food and smiling every time we made conversations with them.BTW, The Caldereta and Pork Bistek are their highlights. I highly recommend these for every readers of my review.

We were lucky enough to have some seat because we went there during dinner. We ordered and the food came quite some time. The foods we ordered were great. We had the beef kaldereta, pinakbet sa bagnet, and sinuglaw. The meat of the beef kaldereta was great and also the sauce (I love the cheese) but I just think the sauce is not proportional to the meat because the sauce was overflowing. The bagnet was crispy outside but not all were easy to chew. The bagoong on the pinakbet for me will be a thumbs up. The sinuglaw has a sour taste that might surprise you. People who love foods with vinegar will like their sinuglaw.I can't give them a rating of 5 because I can hear other customers waiting for their order for a long time. And also the venue is cozy but I think they will be having a hard time welcoming large guests because of the space of the place.Even if they're serving "lutong bahay" foods, they have some cheesecakes for dessert and I love it!

Wow 125 pesos 1 pc sliced green mango with bagoong. Wasn't satisfied with the meal I ordered. Beware the tiles are slippery specially if its raining out side. The places looks good though. The place will not have return customers.

They serve Ilocano food! I enjoyed everything we ordered - Pinakbet, Crispy Boneless Bangus, Sinigang na Salmon, Pork Binagoongan and Grilled Tuna Belly. I love the bagnet in Pinakbet and binagoong was a hit! Sinigang na Salmon was good but too sour. Plenty of choices but I wish they have chicken in their menu. Price is reasonable BUT the service is terrible! It took them 30 mins or more to serve the food, rice was served late, drinks took them long enough to deliver.
