If you are looking for a bang for the buck shabu shabu / hotpot around the streets of malate and ermita, Lau Chan Shabu Shabu is the place to go. (Well, if you really wanted to go on a foodtrip, Malate area is the place to be) The place isn't that promising. Altho it's pretty decent with sinple tables and chairs plus the hotpot. Typical Chinese restaurant. I've been meaning to look for new hotpot places since I've been used to the ones at the malls. Checked on website and found this as I was in Robinson's Manila at the time. Ordered 1 serving of fatty beef priced at Php 170 and boy to my surprise a huge plate of beef was served to me! ( 1 serving can feed up to 3 people ) The quality was good. Thick and fatty cut. Best dipped in the spicy sate sauce they serve. To go along with my fatty beef, I ordered mushrooms, watercress, tofu, and mozzarella balls. If you're new to mozzarella balls, it's like squid balls with mozza filling. So creamy and so good! When eaten with the fatty beef, it's like cheese steak! Lol! Of course I wasn't able to finish them all. I had my left overs cooked, stored it in the fridge and brought it as baon for lunch the next day. Still yummy. I spent around 700 for everything and I believe that's good for 3 pax already. Try it, you won't regret it 😜

Dinining at Lau Chan is somewhat a trip down memory lane. The feel of the restaurant throws you back to the 80s, especially the décor and fixtures. On a rainy day, getting the hotpot is a great choice - it can be customized to your liking. They also serve meals ala carte. The service is commendable, they are prompt and courteous.

Lau Chan offers up a big serving of gastronostalgia. It's one of those places that seem to have actively resisted evolution. Not that it's a bad thing! It's actually part of its charm. Even their customer service retains the warmth and attentiveness of old. Hot pot is good too. Perfect for rainy nights! As far as I could tell, the ingredients are fresh and portion size generous.

My officemates (and other group of friends also) and I always bond over shabu-shabu and grills. We’ve been to golden king, yakimix, tong yang, king one and some korean restaurants. My other officemate recommended to have our lunch here since he’s a regular customer. Typical shabu-shabu but the satay soup is really comparable to the others, really tasty. The fried dumplings was good also.

Everyone in my family liked their yang chow fried rice and fried dumplings. As for the hot pot soup, we usually get the plain and satay, with the pot separated into halves. Staple hot pot ingredients include the cheese balls, seafood balls, watercress, polonchay, corn, sliced fish, sliced chicken, and sliced beef. The place feels quite old but the food is affordable and staff are attentive. Highly recommended :)
