This branch got a special place in my heart since this is where I started exploring myself to different cafes other than just the popular ones around 3 or 4 years ago. This is where I realized that there are more cafes out there that are amazing and just waiting to be discovered. Every time I go to Shang it's a must that I'll have a coffee here no matter what. The only thing that bothers me is that it's literally beside the escalator. I feel like people going down are judging me or something. Hahaha! But other than that it's all really good. You can never go wrong with their coffees and buckys or cakes.

Ambience of the store was great, food was okay. Those two would've been fine and would even equate to a decent review if they only provided us with good service. However, their customer service sucks, BIG TIME.

I love their Bucky but it took forever to serve me one, to-go. Also, I asked them to warm my Bucky but wala man lang init nung inabot sakin. So I asked them to re-warm it. May kaunting feel of init so I took it and left. Upon my first bite after a few steps, malamig-ish ung loob. I just want my warm Bucky, gdi.

There is no doubt that they serve the best coffee in town but the reason I visited this time was the green thing I noticed among the browns while on the escalator 😛 - It turned out to be Pistachio cheesecake (Php 250). We also ordered a Cappuccino (Php 140) and a Long Black (Php 130) to go with it. Loved the IGworthy plating of the cheesecake but taste wise it wasn’t so pistachowy however tasted good with the dollop of cream and pistachio sprinkles. The cappuccino here is the perfect brew for me :)

It was a Pigoutsunday anew with the fam. Naturally we gravitated towards our favorite coffee place in Shang.Love Toby Estates hot mocha and hot chocolate. My sis in law from Australia was here for a visit. So it became a food crawl somewhat as we introduced her to Planet Grapes’ wine and cuisine, Dumaguete’s Sans Rival and Toby Estates hot drinks, cakes and cookies.Hubby and I shared a cup of hot chocolate while sis ordered hot mocha with her calamansi pie and cookies

Coffee - 4/5They're known for their coffees so it's fair to expect. Overall, selection is straightforward and coffees are good especially the flat white. Their iced drinks seem to be too diluted though because of the ice. May be improved - either their proportion of drinks concoction or their prep to service time for their iced drinks.Food - 5/5Love their cakes and bagels!! Must try blueberry bagel with herb garlic (?) spread! YUM!!Location - 3/5Depends on you if its accessibility is good or bad. It's so easy to see, it's a landmark in itself. It's also so exposed that you're most likely to see or be seen by your ex or your boss as they go down the long escalator which ends up right at Toby's.Ambience - 3/5Due to its location, it's not the best place to catch up and unwind and make love to your coffee and reading materials. It's a straightforward place for straightforward coffee. Simple as that.Service - 3/5Slow, sadly.Price - 4/5Within its league, it's one of those with more value for money than others.

After having coffee my entire worklife of over 20 years, I've found my two favorites in Toby's and % Arabica. Toby Smith started his coffee trade in the Woolloomooloo garage of his mom (in Australia) after learning the art of coffee and working with beans from Brazil, Guatemala amd Colombia. He called his blend Woolloomooloo, an ode to where he started, though it actually consists of 4 different types of beans. This is the base for their espresso and coffees that require milk and chocolate since its spicy and smooth nature blends well with both.I ordered my favorite hot mocha (P160) with a double shot and paired it with a Bucky bar (P110).Miguel Vargas must be ecstatic that his bucky is now not just featured by Toby's but by Shake Shack, as well. If you have a good product, maintain your passion and let your love shine through your offering, great things are bound to happen. Happy for him, congrats! On the flip side, this also means more challenges for timeliness, consistency and excellence in output.Being a coffee lover, I decided to make better coffee at home starting with a simple French press machine (before graduating to more complex coffee machines). And I noticed with proper timing, you could actually get a great cup of coffee, just get good beans. I got a single origin, chocolatey hue from Toby's, which I interchange with an exclusive Shanghai blend, Paradiese from Reserve and Illy's Etiopia and Guatemala. After grinding about 15-17 grams of beans, I pour these to the press vessel and cover the grounds with hot water and let it steep for 30 seconds then pour in the remaining hot water that would constitute 1 cup/ mug then time another 3 minutes and 30 sec. before plunging the press. The resultant coffee is so good, it does not need cream or sugar. It is alkaline and not acidic and good for the health.

I frequent Toby’s estate for their lattes but this time I was pretty disappointed. They over frothed the milk which led to a dismal mouthfeel. Props to the barista for his latte art skills though appreciate the craft.

Ordered the matcha latte and their highly raves about chocolate chip cookie. Both were nothing great and I was expecting more. Especially from the cookie because it was in some article of the best cookies but I found this one slightly too sweet (it’s just that my matcha drink balanced out the sweetness) and hard. Not sure if it’s an old one or was over baked but it was chewy in a way that was hard to chew. The dough tasted good though.
