I was really glad when website invited me to review Wagner German Bakery. For one, the only European cuisines that I'm really familiar with are mostly Italian and French, with very little experience on Bulgarian, Yugoslavian and Greek cuisine(I've tried each of them about once). Having to try German cuisine really spices up my appetite. The other reason being the fact that this is a bakery. Eating bread for dinner is kind of unusual, especially here in the Philippines, but I''m a big fan of bread, so I don't mind. Aesthetically, It looks like any other bakery that you can find here in the Metro with some differences here and there. For one, there's a draft beer station on the side which you will NEVER find in any other Filipino bakery and the baskets that they used for the bread are nice, it really feels that you're in a European bakery. For the food, I'd say Wagner's menu is divided into 3 categories, coffee, meals, and of course, the bread. The owner, being a history major, is really informative when it comes to the origin of the food. For instance, the coffee isn't really from Germany, it actually originated from Austria. For their coffee, I went with their Kaffee Verkehrt, which is mocha with a lot of milk. I'm not really fond of coffee so I went with the least amount of coffee in it. For a milk based coffee, it's still bitter for me, but maybe that's just me. Otherwise, this is a really foamy and creamy drink perfect for people like me. For the main course, there were a lot of meals that were served but I will be talking about the ones that really left an impression on me, starting with the Pork Schnitzel, which is a deep fried breaded pork with a potato salad on the side. The pork has this deep fried golden color in it and it's really crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The real selling point for me here is their potato salad which is a winner due to its sour-spicy taste. Their Nürnberger Bratwürste( I can't pronounce it right), is a 5 piece grilled pork sausage with a lot of Sauerkraut inside. I think this dish is a must whenever you're eating at a European cuisine restaurant like this one. The sausage, as expected, is full of flavor and tastes really really good. Their Saurkraut, in particular, tastes really good and is not that sour compared to others. Their Käsespätzle is what I think German's answer to Greek's grilled cheese with a little bit of inspiration from the Italians. It's homemade noodles fried with 3 kinds of cheese and some roasted onions on top. This tastes as good as it looks and a definite must try. We also got to try out their freshly baked pretzels. The owner said that you need to eat it while it's fresh or else it will rot very quickly. It's a very hard bread, very much like a biscuit. It tastes bitter from the outside but very flavorful on the inside. Their bread, on the other hand, is a different story. Their bread was designed to last because of the cold weather in Germany. That's the reason why their outside is really thick so that it can keep the freshness of the dough inside. The best one I've tried is their Lumberjack, which is a bread full of nuts on the outside. We finished our meal with some Kaiserchmarrn which is broken pancake with some raisins and jam on the side. This has got to be the fluffiest and tastiest pancake I've ever tried.

Wagner German Bakery did not only fill my stomach with great German cuisine, but I was also educated with great German culture along with it. I appreciate that website has invited me and other foodies over to discover this unique spot in Makati and for Angelo from Wagner German Bakery for hosting us that evening(and for helping us understand the history behind German food and culture and for helping us pronouce a few words in true German fashion. 😊). The ambiance of the restaurant may be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get to have this experience, I'm sure it will be worth it. The staff is very much efficient and will make sure to attend to your needs for a great dining experience. So here's how the evening went:Kapuziner- It's a double mocha for a reason. It's not exactly mocha like what we expect it(normally the perception would be a balance of chocolate and coffee that can make it appear not too bitter), it is actually a good dose of caffeine that hits right through you strong. I am a fan of strong coffee and I love it! It's not too hot, thanks to the whipped cream served on top of it. It's up to you if you want to drink it as it is or add sugar into it to balance it out. The coffee is served with a glass of water. Why? It's for you to get the caffeine flavor out of your palate or to add to your coffee if it's too strong for you. Chicken Schnitzel- I love how thin the chicken was and not oily. The chicken was still moist inspite of how thin it was, plus the crust it had was exceptional. They use fresh ingredients and legit bread even just to do schnitzel properly. Fiaker Goulash- this dish wasn't salty. It was savory but they made the beef really the star of the dish. The dumpling it was served with was surprisingly creamy, a great contrast to the tart goulash. Leberkäs Burger- i like how the meatloaf tastes. Not too salty, just the righ firmness. Unfortunately, the bread was a bit tough for me.Käsespätzle- a mild flavored egg noodle dish enjoyable for sharing. Nürnberger Bratwürste- a plateful of grilled pork sausage with a side of sauerkraut. Very juicy and slightly smoked. The sauerkraut is a perfect combo to this savory dish to help balance out the richness. Kaiserschmarrn- broken, fluffy pancakes, lightly covered with powdered sugar, sprinkled with rum soaked raisins and a side of ice cream. Pistachio or Vanilla ice cream is their choices for this delectable dessert. Pistachio in my opinion is creamy yet it can overwhelm this dish.Pretzels- these knots of goodness is not too salty, filling and very good to eat by itself. A must try for legit German pretzels! Lumberjack Bread- sourdough bread that is perfect for soup or simply served with butter or jam. Also have a pint of their draft German beers and have a wonderful time. Wagner German Bakery definitely leaves its mark at the heart of Makati for legitimate German cuisine.

I find it odd that this place has 3.1 stars only in website when the rest of the reviews are 3.5-5 stars...Anyway, first time to try their meals and everything we ordered tasted good!I initially wanted the Nürnberger Bratwürste (grilled pork sausages) but they ran out of stock so I went for Hausgemachter Leberkäse (homemade meatloaf). Pretzel was not available so they asked if I was okay to have croissant instead - told them yes. Their meatloaf is delicious, doesn't resemble the taste of canned meatloaf. I also love their croissant which has an evident butter taste while its texture is soft and easy to chew.My friends ordered Käsespätzle and Chicken Schnitzel. Since serving of each order is big, we decided to share the food amongst us. Breading and spices used for the schnitzel tasted great (planning to check out the veal schnitzel when we come back). Noodles used in the Käsespätzle was quite different but we loved it.Sad though because the dessert I randomly tried 2 weeks ago here (some sort of pastry with thick cream filling) was not available at the time of visit. I hope that the next time I drop by, meron na! 💖
